Description
Looking for an unusual barn image for that rustic den that needs something special above the fireplace or sofa? The Steinke round barn of St. John, Washington may be just what you're looking for! The unusual, historic barn was built by Max Steinke in 1916 on land his father, Theodore William Steinke, purchased at the turn of the 20th century. The Dechenne family has farmed the land since 1935. It is located 5 miles west of St. John, Washington. on Hwy 23. Round barns were especially popular as dairy barns for practical purposes and most of them were built between 1890-1920. The farmer would have his cows with the heads toward the silo, and the business end was in the larger circumference of the round barn, much more conveniently located to take care of manure and wash out when needed. History records that George Washington designed and built a round barn on his sizeable estate in Virginia. I liked this simple, straight on view of the Steinke barn against the vibrant backdrop of a lovely mid summer day in rural Washington.
