Description
It was such a thrill on our last night in Africa, while on a cruise of the Chobe River, to witness a large group of elephants cross the river right in front of our boat. Among the group was a one week old baby, according to our local guide, and we were warned that things could be ugly due to the fact that these waters were home to large crocodiles who love to feast on baby elephants. As they were leaving the far shore, it was noticed that the tiny one was strategically placed between the largest male who was first in line and his mother. As they got into deeper water, we could see the head of the large male and the mother but the baby was swimming under water and could not be seen. Every so often, a tiny trunk would stick up above the water much like a periscope and everyone on the boat would breathe a sigh of relief. As they finally came to shore and we saw the baby in full view, happiness was evident on the faces of all who were watching. Little guy made it!
