Description
While on our first safari during a recent trip to South Africa, we saw many, many elephants. None were as special, though, as the very first ones we spotted as the sun was just coming up. A family of three, a mama, dad, and baby, emerged from the fog as we rounded a bend in the rough dirt road. We came to an abrupt stop and sat in our safari vehicle watching these beautiful animals as they stood directly in front of us before turning and disappearing into the bush. This image is of the mother elephant who shook her huge ears, just before the baby led the way off the road into the safety of the thick vegetation. I wondered later if the shaking ears could have been some sort of a signal to the baby. As I look at the picture now, I like to imagine that she's joyful because in the profile stance, she looks happy! My original photograph has been digitally enhanced to create a painterly presentation.
