Description
Gullfoss ("Golden Falls") is a waterfall located in the canyon of the Hvítá river in southwest Iceland. This particular waterfall is so large that it is sometimes compared to Niagara Falls. On the day that my husband and I visited the site, it was so blustery and overcast with sleet like rain that our photo opportunities were limited, but it is truly an impressive waterfall. The Hvítá river flows southward, and about a kilometer above the falls it turns sharply to the right flowing down into a wide curved three-step "staircase" before abruptly plunging down once again in two stages. The crevice below, into which the two stages fall, is huge, measuring about 66 feet wide and 1.6 miles in length and extends perpendicular to the flow of the river. During the first half of the 20th century and some years into the late 20th century, there was much speculation about using Gullfoss to generate electricity. During this period, the waterfall was rented indirectly by its owners to foreign investors. However, the investors' attempts were unsuccessful, partly due to lack of money. The waterfall was later sold to the state of Iceland, and is now protected.
