Description
Quite by accident, my husband and I discovered the Abbey of Sant' Antimo on a springtime drive through central Italy. It was a great day in Tuscany, and we just wanted to explore the region and follow our noses, coincidentally finding ourselves at this great historical location as the sun was setting behind the mountains to the back left of the abbey and leaving a nice warm glow in the distant sky. After doing a bit of research, we discover that the site dates back to the time of Charlemagne and was actually on the route of pilgrims journeying to Rome. Originally housing Benedictine monks and then falling into years of disrepair and vacancy, a small order of Olivetan Benedictine monks occupy the monastery currently.
