Before my trip to South Africa, I couldn't even imagine how much fun it would be to photograph hippopotamuses in the wild! My mind was on lions, leopards, cape buffaloes, and elephants...not hippos. But I was in for an unexpected thrill! These unique looking beasts of the water proved to be amazingly entertaining and a lot more photogenic than I could have imagined. Our first introduction to the hippos of South Africa was on a cruise of the St. Lucia Estuary, home to over 800 hippos, more than 1200 crocodiles, and a vast variety of birds. By the time dark descended and we were docking the boat, I had taken over a thousand shots of the fascinating wildlife along the estuary, but by far the hippos were the best!
Simply put, I LOVE TO TAKE PICTURES. I found this love later in life than many do, after raising my family and enjoying a career in education, both as a teacher and school administrator. Currently, much of my time revolves around travel and photography, and when I'm not traveling and taking pictures, I'm thinking about traveling and taking pictures! The Tennessee valley is my home, so I am surrounded by some of the most scenic areas of the United States with the added bonus of plentiful wildlife and birds...literally paradise for a photographer!
