Description
The Manhattan Municipal Building and the New York Life Insurance building are two of the iconic skyscrapers of the New York City skyline that stand out because of their distinctive architecture. In this image, the taller of the two buildings is the Manhattan Municipal Building, also known as the David N. Dinkins Building, that was built in the early 1900's to increase governmental space demands after the consolidation of the city's five boroughs. Completed in 1914, its construction marked the end of the City Beautiful movement in New York. It was the first building in NYC to have a subway station built into its base. The New York Life Insurance Building, with its gilded gold roof, is equally distinctive from its Madison Avenue location. The tower is 40 stories tall, consisting of 34 office stories topped by a pyramidal, gilded six-story roof. The structure was constructed in 1927–1928 as New York Life's headquarters and still serves that function. It overlooks Madison Square Park in the Rose Hill and NoMad neighborhoods of Manhattan. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark in 1972, and was designated a city landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2000.
