Description
Overlooking the confluence of the Hiwassee and Tennessee Rivers on a very cold January day, the view is somewhat stark, but also very beautiful. Birchwood, Tennessee is home to the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge, a protected area of approximately 6,000 acres, where bird watchers and wildlife lovers come from miles around to observe and photograph during all four seasons. From early December until late February, this refuge is a migration stop for over 11,000 sand hill cranes traveling north from their winter home in Florida. It's a photographer's dream to be present during the peak of the migration to document this phenomenon. Earlier in the day, that's exactly what my husband and I had been doing, but as the golden hour descended, we left the refuge and moved a few miles down the road to this overlook location for this view. There were a few cranes here fishing in the waters below, but it was the stark winter landscape that drew our attention. (My original photograph has been digitally enhanced to achieve a painterly presentation.)
