Description
In an ideal location geographically set high on Castle Hill and surrounded on three sides by steep cliffs, Stirling Castle dates back to the 14th century when it was built as a major defensive fortress. Before the union with England, the castle was used a royal residence for Scottish kings and queens, and several have been crowned there, including Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1542. The look-outs, strategically located along the upper castle walls used to provide a spot for scouts to see approaching enemies, but today give visitors a great vantage point to view the surrounding countryside and mountains in the distance. On the day I was there, it was a typical day in Scotland with picturesque fog lingering over the landscape adding to the moody feel of this enchanting historic castle.
