Description
Located in the small medieval village of Vezelay, France, the Basilica and Abbey of St. Magdalene, towers above the town at the top of the hill. Since medieval times the site has been a pilgrimage destination for many and still remains so today. Dating back to the 11th century, the Abbey is a wonderful example of Romanesque architecture. Since 1979, the village, abbey, and basilica have official designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many come to view the crypt and relics of Mary Magdalen located in the basement of the abbey. The accompanying image was taken in the area where the relics are displayed where there are also simple benches available for prayer and meditation after viewing the relics.
