Description
Known world wide for it's Book of Kells, the campus of Ireland's oldest university, founded in 1592, is a peaceful haven away from the busy streets of the Irish capital.
A landmark in the university grounds, and indeed in Dublin itself, the campanile stands at 100ft or just over 30 metres and is one of the city's most photographed structures.
The campanile is of course a bell tower, finished in 1853 and designed by the famous architect Charles Lanyon. A bell tower has existed on the site since before the foundation of the university as this part of Dublin was, prior to 1592, a monastery.
