Description
The Colosseum or Coliseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is an oval amphitheatre in the center of the city of Rome, Italy. Built of travertine limestone, tuff, and brick-faced concrete, it was the largest amphitheatre ever built at the time and held 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. Built between 72 and 80 AD, it was used for gladiatorial contests, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and classical mythology dramas. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era, but later was used in a much more utilitarian manner for housing, workshops, religious order quarters, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine. On the outer edge of the early Rome ancient ruins located in the city center, the colosseum is certainly one of Rome's easiest recognizable landmarks and an iconic image worldwide. I love the black and white version of this image because of the wonderful contrast and details that seem so much more refined in this option.
