Description
At the top of Pryor mountain, located close to the Wyoming/Montana state line, a band of approximately 160 wild mustangs roam free. When my husband and I reserved a spot on this day long adventure, I had no idea that it would end up being one of the best travel experiences I've ever had. It was incredibly difficult to get to the top of the mountain, taking 2 1/2 hours to travel 12 miles straight up, on a route that I hesitate to even call a road. As we bounced and jostled along, I was fearful that my camera could easily be damaged as the three of us in the back seat of a giant pick up truck tried to hang on to our equipment and the door handles...anything that we could grab so as not to slam into each other. I kept thinking that there was no way that it could be worth the torment, and I knew I'd be bruised and battered from the ordeal! BUT when I saw this expansive alpine meadow full of the most beautiful wildflowers at their peak, it took my breath away. And then there were the wild horses, many of whom had new babies standing in clusters all over the top of the mountain. As we wandered around all day in this magical place, it was surreal. I was so sad when it was time to get back in the truck so that we could be back down the mountain before dark. The trip down wasn't as bad as it had been on the way up because the euphoria of the whole experience was still with me, and I was just thankful that I had been lucky enough to be a part of it all.
