Description
The Marktbrunnen of Mainz represents one of the first architectural formed decorated fountains of the Renaissance. Originally an important draw well, the fountain was once a source of fresh water in the inner city and in 1767 it was altered to a pumping well. Most likely the sculptor was Peter Schro, and it was crafted in the workshop of the Mainz sculptor Hans Backoffen. Markbrunnen was donated to the community by prince elector and cardinal Albert. The inscription on the fountain honors Emperor Charles V and his victory at the battle of Pavia in the Peasants War. I noticed this beautiful sculpted fountain when my husband and I visited market square in old city Mainz and loved the detail, symbolism, and colors in addition to the interesting history. By composing the image vertically, I was able to get some of the amazing architecture of the area in the photograph as well as a glimpse of the wonderful market that was in full swing during our time there. As a decor piece, the image projects a great European feel and has enough interesting textures, lines, shapes, and colors to make it a classy addition to any space in your home! (My original photograph has been digitally enhanced to achieve a more artistic presentation.)
