Description
You will see these shaggy cows quite often if you spend much time visiting the countryside of Scotland. They originated in the Scottish Highlands and the Outer Hebrides Islands and are easily recognizable by their long horns, and long, shaggy coats. It is a hardy breed, able to withstand the intemperate conditions in the region. They are known as Highland cattle, although in Scotland they're often referred to as "Heeland Coos." In recent years, Highland cattle have also become popular in the US. Breeders are now in several states, including my home state of Tennessee. My husband and I recently spent a day at a local farm where they are bred and raised, although this image was taken in Scotland.
