Description
Along the Cape Tryon road to the sea, a farmers recently mowed field is bordered by a flourishing stand of Queen Anne's lace. The scientific name of this commonly seen late summer wildflower is Daucus carota, whose common names also include wild carrot, bird's nest, and bishop's lace. Familiar to many and usually thought of as a weed, it is a white, flowering plant in the family Apiaceae, native to temperate regions of Europe and southwest Asia, and naturalized to North America and Australia. I love the layers of color that provide a wonderful backdrop for the wild and free stems in the foreground. Sometimes the very simplest components of nature, on a particularly lovely day, are able to create a pleasing composition in an unlikely setting.
