Description
While spending a long day in Cades Cove with thousands of others at the height of spring bear season, my patience began to wear thin. Bear jams can be long and aggravating as people block the one way loop road in their excitement of spotting the distant mama and cubs in a field. So often, without even thinking, they jump out of their cars and run toward the wildlife to get a quick cell phone picture, leaving hundreds of other cars behind them. This had been my experience on this perfect spring day, and I wasn't exactly sure how long I'd be staying in the Cove, despite the fact that I had come early in the morning with plans to stay until sunset. In my frustration, I pulled off at the Abrams Creek trailhead to use the restroom and decided to just take a break and walk along the creek. I had been in the car way too much already while people enjoyed the bears! As I walked along the quiet path and enjoyed the serenity of the area, I was reminded of one of my favorite hymns, "It Is Well With My Soul." Things changed for me as I began to count my blessings and realize how fortunate I am to live close enough to enjoy the Great Smoky Mountains often. I took a few pictures along the stroll and headed back to my car feeling refreshed and determined to be patient as others enjoyed this wonderful place. The rest of the day was better for having taken the time to slow down and think about the goodness of God.
