Description
The Parthenon is a former temple on the Athenian Acropolis of Greece, dedicated to the goddess Athena, whom the people of Athens considered their patron. Construction began in 447 BC when the Athenian Empire was at the peak of its power and was completed in 438 BC, although decoration of the building continued until 432 BC. It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece. Its decorative sculptures are considered some of the high points of Greek art. The Parthenon is regarded as an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece, Athenian democracy and Western civilization, and one of the world's greatest cultural monuments. It was a thrill for me to climb the hill of the Acropolis on a perfect early spring morning and view this iconic temple first hand. As a photographer, I was especially excited about the perfect light, but photographing the Parthenon was not without its challenges. People moving about, scaffolding, renovation tools and equipment were all things that had to be worked around in composing my shots. I finally decided that I'd have to settle for just parts of the huge structure because a good image of the whole Parthenon just wasn't going to happen. However, I was happy with this image of the side columns that lit up in the pure light of early morning. The Greek flag in the lower left was a nice bonus!
