Description
Once there was a mountain community known as Elkmont. An integral part of the Great Smokies National Park, today this area is often referred to as a ghost town. Situated in the upper Little River Valley area of the park, Elkmont's storied history includes being home to a pioneer Appalachian community, a logging settlement, and a resort community for the well-to-do who could afford to spend summers there. Presently the area is home to a campground, ranger station, and historically preserved district maintained by the national park. This photo was taken one morning in early summer as I walked through some of the abandoned cabins that still occupy the area that once was a fancy resort for many who could afford to ride the train from Knoxville and summer in the mountains. I liked the colors in this shot of the kitchen and the early 20th style corner cabinet. The scattered leaves on the floor add to the mood that this sweet cottage is now just left to decay or eventually be torn down.
