Description
The baby bison are commonly known as "red dogs," and a trip to Yellowstone National Park during the spring season guarantees that you'll see plenty of these adorable little ones kicking up their heels and enjoying life. Once the babies are born, the cows and their offspring form a "nursery herd" of just mamas and babies. These herds can be very large and do not have any adult bulls among them. Members of the nursery herd stick together, moving through the park as a unit, as the mothers teach and train the young ones. I found this so interesting and observed this phenomenon first hand on my last springtime visit.
