Description
The Mosque–Cathedral of Córdoba, whose ecclesiastical name is the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, is the Catholic cathedral of the Diocese of Córdoba dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and located in the Spanish region of Andalusia. By far, this is the most unusual and amazing cathedral that I've visited. Because it was built as, and for many years was, a mosque, there's nothing traditionally cathedral-like about the building. Originally dating back to 784, the edifice was converted to a Christian cathedral in 1236 after the Roman conquest of the city of Cordoba, Spain. Until you see it in person, it's very hard to imagine how such a drastic conversion of holy space could work, but I was amazed that the Moorish elements and more recently added Renaissance elements do mesh quite nicely.
