Description
On the morning of our last day in Botswana, we had a scheduled game drive at daybreak. Dreading the 16 1/2 hour plane trip back home that would begin that afternoon and trying to get all of my packing done, my mind wasn't really focused too much on the shortened safari trip that our tour director had packed in to this already full day. As it turned out, we saw plenty of interesting wildlife, and this ground hornbill was just one example of brand new sightings that morning. Although we had already been in Africa for 18 days by this point, somehow our paths had not yet crossed with this large, exotic looking creature. Standing about a meter tall and living for 30 plus years, the ground hornbill is an very interesting bird. They feed on insects, snakes, amphibians, other birds, and even tortoises. In this image, he's just starting to run, probably because our safari vehicle had interrupted his morning hunting time. Although you can't see it too well in this shot, the eyes and eyelashes on these birds are quite amazing!
