Description
Because I live very near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, it's a common thing to see and observe bears during most of the year. Most of the bears that I have photographed are females and cubs because they are usually together and frequently sighted in Cades Cove here I spend a lot of photography days. The much larger male bears are usually in the higher elevations of the mountains, coming down to the Cove for mating season in mid-summer, but may be seen any time of year if food sources are scarce. I found this big male along the road one afternoon as I was on my way home from the Cove and actually took this shot from my car window because he was too large and too close to get out of my car. When I look closely at the image much later, I surmised that he is an older bear who has seen his share of conflict and has a lot of battle scars on his face. I wish I would have been able to include something else in the shot that would have given a better perspective to his size...this guy was huge and still holds the record for the biggest bear I've every photographed!
