Description
In the central part of the Irish city of Galway, fourteen flags are proudly displayed representing the fourteen tribes of Galway. Each flag boasts a family name of a merchant family that dominated the commercial, social, and political life of this vibrant city in the western part of the country between the 13th and late 19th centuries. The family tribe names are Athy, Blake, Bodkin, Browne, D'Arcy, Deane, Font, Ffrench, Joyce, Kirwan, Lynch, Martin, Morris, and Skerritt. Serving as a reminder of the history of Galway, the colorful flags also add a very nice touch to the downtown pedestrian area. It's obvious from the photo that some bright colors were a welcome sight on the dark, overcast day I was there!
