Founded in 1340 as the residence of the doge, who was the supreme authority of the Venetian Republic, the Doges Palace is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. The Venetian Republic was a sovereign state and maritime republic in what is now northeastern Italy that lasted from 697 AD until 1797 AD. The aristocratic palace is located in St. Mark's square right next to St. Mark's basilica.
