Description
For me, there's nothing like a Smoky Mountains sunrise, and I've found that often the higher up you are, the better the experience. Clingman's Dome is the highest mountain in Tennessee and therefore, the "top of old Smoky!" I stood at 6,643 feet in elevation on a very cold, finger numbing kind of morning in pitch dark fumbling around as I tried to set up my tripod, so I could hop back in the running car that had the heat on full blast. Although I was well layered up in addition to having a warm hat, scarf, and gloves, I must have wondered at least 100 times if this was going to be worth it. Maybe I just wasn't cut out for this photography thing! Once that sun popped from behind the distant ridge, it was amazing how quickly all of those thoughts faded from my mind. I was in awe and trying to capture the beauty in front of me, behind me, and on both sides of me. I don't think I've been up quite this high since that day, but the experience ended up being exhilarating in the end, despite my early misgivings.
