Description
Located in the city center along the Grand Parade, the Cape Town city hall is a beautiful architectural gem. Built in 1905 of imported limestone from Bath, England, the style is a combination of Edwardian and Victorian architecture with a lot of ornate detail. Although the original intent was to house governmental offices in the building, use today centers around cultural events, specifically concerts of the Cape Town symphony orchestra. Topped by a lovely four sided clock tower, actually patterned after the famous Big Ben of London, the edifice is easy to spot as it towers above the surrounding buildings. Nelson Mandela chose to make his first speech after release from prison in 1990 at this site.
