Description
The Cape Point Lighthouse that currently stands about two thirds of the way up Dias Point is actually the second one built here. There are two peaks of the rugged cliff that predominates the scenery, with Dias Point being the lower of the two. The first lighthouse was on the top of the higher peak, but foggy conditions at the top as well as the fact that the first lighthouse was so high that it was seen too early by ships far out at sea, causing them to approach more quickly than they should. After the sinking of the Lisitania in 1911, due to the fog making the lighthouse hidden to the approaching ship, it was determined that the lighthouse must be relocated.
