Description
Arles is a city on the Rhône River in the Provence region of southern France. It's primarily known for inspiring the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh. Once a provincial capital of ancient Rome, Arles is also known for many remains from that era, including Arles Amphitheater, now hosting plays, concerts and bullfights. Arles has a rich history and was an important Phoenician trading port, before it was taken over by the Romans. The Romans took the town in 123 BC and expanded it into an important city. A canal link to the Mediterranean Sea was built here in 104 BC. There were many points of interest as my husband and I strolled through the city on a lovely spring day, but one of my favorite photos of the day is this bright, yellow door and adjacent window box. This little vignette exemplifies the charm and allure of this ancient city.
