Description
Sunrise at Clingman's Dome in October can be a freezing endeavor. At 6,643 feet elevation, this mountain peak is the highest in the Great Smoky Mountains and can be counted on to be a cooling off point even on a summer day. When I decided to head up top for sunrise in early October, I knew that full winter gear would be necessary, and indeed it was. There were probably 50 others that were also there to see the spectacular show as the sun pops above the eastern horizon. This shot was taken a few moments before that just as some warm light rays were appearing all along the tops of the furthest ridge and reflecting a pinkish glow down on the layered clouds in front of me. One ray just happened to hot a spot of red where leaves were turning. I loved the experience and loved this view. There's no escaping it...I'm a mountain girl at heart and always feel at home when I'm out in my beloved Smokies!
