Description
Armadale Castle is a ruined country house in Armadale, Skye and was the former home of the MacDonald clan. A mansion house was first built here around 1790, and in 1815, a Scottish baronial style mock-castle, intended for show rather than defense, designed by James Gillespie Graham, was built next to the house. Since 1925, the castle, long ago abandoned by the Macdonald family, has fallen into ruin. The gardens around the castle have been maintained, and are now home to the Clan Donald Centre, which operates the Museum of the Isles. The castle ruins and expansive gardens are one of the top tourist attractions on the Isle of Skye, and the gardens were definitely my favorite part of our visit there. Lush and reminiscent of a free style English garden with quiet, meandering paths and walkways, the gardens were a delight on a lovely summer day.
