Description
The states of Tennessee and North Carolina share the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and this image was taken very near the state line. Clingman's Dome, at an elevation of 6643 feet, is the highest point in the Smokies and provides a perfect vantage point to catch a mountain sunrise, but can only be accessed certain times a year due to the cold, icy conditions during the winter months. As I stood outside waiting for the light to appear in the horizon and using a flashlight to mount my camera on the tripod, it was absolutely freezing on this late October morning, and I was "layered up" in my attire. All was worth it, though, as the sun began to light up the beautiful landscape. This shot was taken just moments before the sun popped above the distant ridge, but I knew that once the sun was up, the misty ridges wouldn't be as visible and this particular shot would be lost.
