Description
Venice was one of the most memorable cities that I've ever visited. Very probably, that's because this Italian destination is so different than anywhere else! Venice, the capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region, is built on more than 100 small islands in a lagoon of the Adriatic Sea. It has no roads, just canals – including the Grand Canal thoroughfare – lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces. The central square, Piazza San Marco, contains St. Mark’s Basilica, which is tiled with Byzantine mosaics, and the Campanile bell tower offering views of the city’s red roofs. Picturesque, exciting, and vibrant, I was amazed at how peaceful Venice can be at certain times, despite all of the tourists and activity. As we took a gondola ride on the Grand Canal, our experience was a delightfully tranquil one that I'll always fondly remember.
