Description
What's not to like about the lilac breasted roller? When I spotted this bird for the first time while in Botswana, it literally took my breath away perched in the perfect light of a beautiful May morning. The colors almost seem unreal. The lilac-breasted roller is an African bird of the roller family, Coraciidae. It is widely seen in sub-Saharan Africa. It prefers open woodland and savanna, and it is for the most part absent from treeless places. I would get to see several of these on my first trip to Africa and then, again years later, in Tanzania. I still hold to my first impression that the lilac breated is the prettiest bird I've ever seen!
