Description
Until my most recent trip to coastal South Carolina, I had never heard the term "boneyard beach." Apparently years of saltwater tides washing upon trees that are growing very close to the shore has the effect of killing and then petrifying the tree. As a result, these boneyard beaches are dotted along the shore and will remain in their natural state unless park service or local authorities come and do a clean up. These areas are mysterious, eerie, other worldly and interesting to visit. My husband and I found two near Charleston and loved taking pictures of the gnarly tree and stump formations. This image was taken at Hunting Island State Park on a part of the beach that was far from the swimming and sunning area where the majority of beach goers congregate. We were thrilled to have it all to ourselves.
