Description
The common basilisk is a species of lizard in the family Corytophanidae. The species is endemic to Central America and South America, where it is found near rivers and streams in rainforests. On a recent trip to Costa Rica, we saw several of these critters, and they tend to stand out with their bright green color. As I understand it, this species actually comes in different colors, but we mainly saw the bright green ones. Their nick name is the "Jesus Christ Lizard" because they can actually walk on water for a short distance. Most of the ones we saw we swimming or sitting on a log, but we did get a quick glimpse of one walking on water, and it was quite a sight!
