Description
The Palace of Versailles was the greatest example of unbridled opulence that I have ever seen. It served as the principal royal residence of France from 1682, under Louis XIV, until the start of the French Revolution in 1789. Located in the department of Yvelines, about 20 kilometres southwest of the center of Paris, the palace is now a historical monument and UNESCO World Heritage site, notable especially for the ceremonial Hall of Mirrors. In 2017 the Palace of Versailles received 7,700,000 visitors, making it the second-most visited monument in the Île-de-France region, just behind the Louvre and ahead of the Eiffel Tower. This image was taken at the very end of our tour as we exited the palace, and it was one of
my favorites of the hundreds of pictures that I took while there. Ostentatious to say the least, this three story grand staircase had a lot going on, but I loved the effect of how it all worked together cohesively with the color tones and patterns. It represents well the aristocratic lifestyle of the French kings during this period.
