Description
The Tipton Place, in Cades Cove, is one of eleven historic structures that is part of the remaining heritage of an early community of mountain residents. This homestead dates back to the 1870's, although the land was obtained by William Tipton as early as the 1820's as part of the original Tennessee land grant program. It was finally a relative of William, Hamp Tipton who was a Civil War veteran, that constructed the two story home and outbuildings that make up the present homestead. This cantilever barn actually sits just across the road from the two story log cabin home and is a replica of the original one.

Yes, there are actually two cantilever style barns in the Cove, so it must have been fairly common in the area at the time. Thanks!
