Very high on Montserrat mountain about an hour outside of Barcelona in the Catalonia region of Spain, an 11th century monastery can be found. Still an active monastery of the Order of Saint Benedict, there is also a basilica on site that is known for enshrining the image of the Virgin of Montserrat, also known as the Black Madonna. As a lover of symmetry, rich colors, detail, and Gothic architecture, I love to photograph sites like this. Long ago I learned that many times it's the ceilings that I love best, so I always look up as soon as I come in and I don't think I've ever been disappointed. This image is a portion of the Basilica ceiling. I especially loved the beautiful ornate details and the richness of the colors. The small round windows on each side of the central dome provided some nice natural light in the large dark space. The image of the Black Madonna, although very small in scale in this very large space, can be seen in the center at the bottom of the image.
Simply put, I LOVE TO TAKE PICTURES. I found this love later in life than many do, after raising my family and enjoying a career in education, both as a teacher and school administrator. Currently, much of my time revolves around travel and photography, and when I'm not traveling and taking pictures, I'm thinking about traveling and taking pictures! The Tennessee valley is my home, so I am surrounded by some of the most scenic areas of the United States with the added bonus of plentiful wildlife and birds...literally paradise for a photographer!
