Description
The Palace of Versailles was the greatest example of unbridled opulence that I have ever seen. It served as the principal royal residence of France from 1682, under Louis XIV, until the start of the French Revolution in 1789. Located in the department of Yvelines, about 20 kilometres southwest of the center of Paris the palace is now a historical monument and UNESCO World Heritage site, notable especially for the ceremonial Hall of Mirrors. In 2017 the Palace of Versailles received 7,700,000 visitors, making it the second-most visited monument in the Île-de-France region, just behind the Louvre and ahead of the Eiffel Tower. This image was taken at the beginning of our tour as we entered the palace, and it was my favorite of the hundreds of pictures that I took while there. Simply elegant, with beautiful patterns and symmetry, this space was not anything like the rest of the palace with its over the top baroque decor and design. I had to linger a while to be able to capture the shot after the hundreds of people had filtered out and I had it to myself with this beautiful natural light, but was so glad I did!
