Description
The colonial charter of the city of Savannah forbade Catholics to settle in the city. The English trustees feared that the Roman Catholics would be more loyal to the Spanish authorities in Florida rather than the English government in Georgia. The prohibition ceased after the American Revolution, and construction finally begin on Saint John the Baptist Cathedral in 1873 and completed with the addition of the spires in 1896. In 1898, a fire destroyed most of the church but it was rebuilt by 1899. This image depicts close up detail of one of the three main doors on the front of the church.
