Description
The laying of the original foundation stone of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Paris was on June 16, 1875. Funding of seven million francs, raised entirely by private donations, was gone before any construction above ground had been done. From that point on, expenses were solicited from pilgrims who made their way to a provisional chapel that was constructed on the holy site, and creative appeals for parishioners to purchase columns, doors, and even bricks as an investment in the project. The overall style of the cathedral is a free interpretation of the Romano-Byzantine elements of architecture, an unusual choice at the time. Two equestrian statues of designated saints, Joan of Arc and King Louis IX, flank the center. The site is the highest point in Paris and provides a wonderful city view, especially at sunset. Visitors love to sit on the front steps and wait for the sun to go down over the city.
