Description
Before my recent trip to Africa, I had given very little thought to hippopotamuses. Of course I had seen pictures of them and gotten an occasional glimpse at the zoo through the years, but had no idea how interesting and fun they can be to learn about and observe in the wild. As it turned out, we saw so many of these amazing animals in several places that they became a favorite before the trip was ended. One of the things that we enjoyed while on our river game cruise was seeing them open their huge mouths, almost as if competing in a yawning contest all along the river. According to our naturalist guide, this is usually an indication that the animal is either stressed or showing dominance. Most of the images I liked best of the hippos were the ones taken from the side in profile while they were "yawning," but I actually liked this one from behind that shows so clearly his little ears, giant nostrils, and even the little hairs on his upper lip! It was a perfect time of the late afternoon to get a reflection and shimmer of light around the hippo on the Zambezi River.
