Description
Taken while on the ferry en route from Liberty Island to Ellis Island on a chilly winter morning, the iconic NYC skyline makes a nice back drop for the colorful buildings of Ellis Island in the foreground. Ellis Island is a federally owned island in New York Harbor that contains a museum and former immigration inspection station. As the United States' busiest immigrant inspection station from 1892 to 1954, approximately 12 million immigrants arriving at the Port of New York and New Jersey were processed there under federal law. Today, it is part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument, accessible to the public only by ferry. The buildings of Ellis Island, circa 1893, include the main immigration station and several hospital buildings used to house immigrants who could not pass the initial health screening upon arrival to the United States. Many immigrants recovered while others died before they were able to pursue their dream in America.
