Description
Flamingos or are a type of wading bird in the family Phoenicopteridae. Four flamingo species are distributed throughout the Americas, including the Caribbean, and two species are native to Africa, Asia, and Europe. When I spotted this one, I was surprised to see the bright orange color because all of the flamingos I had seen before this time were pink. Research indicates that these interesting waders can be pink or orange or white depending on what they eat. Flamingos eat algae and crustaceans that contain pigments called carotenoids. For the most part, these pigments are found in the brine shrimp and blue-green algae that the birds eat. I must admit that this beauty was not found in some exotic location as I was sipping a cool drink by the shore, but rather at the Bronx Zoo while on a visit to New York! He's beautiful nonetheless, and with the rippling deep blue water and the catch light in his eye, this orange flamingo would make a wonderful addition to your home in an area that needs a great pop of color.
