Description
The Patriarchal Cathedral Basilica of Saint Mark, more commonly known as Saint Mark's basilica, was certainly a highlight of my visit to Venice. It is located adjacent to the Doges Palace in Saint Mark's square and originally was the chapel of the doge. The basilica is considered one of the best examples of Italo-Byzantine architecture and has been nicknamed the "church of gold" due to the lavish amount of actual gold incorporated into the building itself. Incredible Renaissance art is incorporated into the exterior facade in four domed alcoves above the four large front doors. Each of these striking art pieces made out of richly colored mosaic tiles depicts one aspect of the history of the relics of Saint Mark's. This image is a close up of some of the domes along the top of the basilica to show the exquisite detail and ornate architectural elements. A beautiful clock face has a prominent place in the front, just below cluster of domes, of this photograph.
