Description
It's late summer, and the characteristic foggy mornings that give the Smoky Mountains their name are a common occurrence in this place known as Cades Cove. Since I live just an hour away, I am frequently one of the many cars lined up at the entrance gate when the park rangers unlock it for a sunrise entrance. On this late August morning, an especially heavy fog had descended and evidence of the sun was still quite a while away. As I made my way around the loop road and passed the Dan Lawson homestead, I was struck by the extra coziness and appeal that the fog contributed to this special landscape. Ghosts of trees were visible in the back drop and you can almost feel the misty atmosphere and humidity of a promising summer day. The simple setting of a split rail fence and an historic log cabin pull you in to the scene and make it easy to understand why millions of visitors each year choose to visit this very spot in one of America's most popular national parks.
