Description
Of the nine historic structures in the historic Appalachian community of Cades Cove, the Tipton Place has to be one of my top two homesteads. The charming log home dates back to the early 1870's when Colonel "Hamp" Tipton built the home for his daughters, known as the school marms of the Cove. Hamp actually lived in nearby Tuckaleechee Cove, which is north of Cades Cove, toward Townsend. The home was later rented to the James McCauley family before it became part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. This image, a double pen corn crib, is one of several outbuildings on the property and is located across the road from the house and just in front of the cantilever barn.
