Description
Commonly known as the "Ceremonial Gateway to Lisbon," the Belem Tower is a sight to behold on the edge of Portugal's western coast. It was contructed over a period of four years, 1514-1519 and is an example of Portuguese Renaissance or Portuguese Manueline architecture. At 98 feet high with four stories, the tower is quite strikes an imposing image against the gorgeous blues of the sky and ocean. It is made out of lioz limestone, native to the Lisbon region and also called royal limestone. With its turrets and castle-like appearance, the Belem Tower gives off a fairy tale air in its idyllic coastal setting.
