Description
Our safaris far exceeded my expectations on a recent trip to Africa. It was an incredible experience to see the wildlife in their natural habitat, but equally as thrilling was learning so much about them. I never knew that hippopotamuses do not swim. When you see them gliding through water, they are actually walking on the bottom! They are not able to breathe when submerged and can be counted on to surface regularly to catch a breath. After the elephant and rhinoceros, the hippo is the third heaviest land mammal and males average weighing as much as 3,000 pounds. Despite their huge size and short legs, these mammals can run up to 30 miles per hour and are considered one of the most dangerous animals because they are easily agitated, high aggressive, and extremely unpredictable. I found these two big boys while on a sunset game cruise along the Chobe River on our last evening in Botswana. They were grazing side by side and seemed unperturbed as our boat got fairly close to where they were.
